So, along with photography, I also write.
I've just never shared any of my writing here on DeviantArt.

This is wholly because of fear.
Fear of theft.

Although I am deeply passionate about my photography,
I am even more so in regard to my writing (and I don't even
know if I'm any good at it, because I have never let anyone
read my works, aside from a couple close personal friends
and loved ones!)

Most of the pieces I have written are very short, and very personal.
And I feel torn.

I want to share, because not only would I love critical feedback,
but I am human, and feel as if somehow this would be a
sort of stress releaser.

But at the same time, I do not want to share (not just yet anyhow),
because thieves can steal visual images quite easily, but they steal the
written word with even less effort (or so it seems from past experiences).

So, I'm at a fork in the road.
Do I go left?
Do I go right?

I can't just stand here forever, without decision.
I'll get hungry after awhile.

So my question for you is:
Do you have any remote interest in reading my written works?

I would love to read your works, but I recognize your fear. I suffer from the same issue, and due to the fact that I do write rather long novels (or rather A novel) I have chosen to keep mine private until I am finished. this will probably be in a few more years, so the issue you deal with is not so immediate for me.
For you, after reading some other comments, my advice is to post it on watt pad and include a link or url or something for your followers to find it by. :) just make sure it's safe.

I would love to read your writing, but I also understand your fears. It's why my novel isn't online. I think watt pad would be a good idea, as someone already said. You can't copy and paste on their site. I wish dA would do that . . .

POST IT ON HERE ( www.wattpad.com ) and leave a link! It is copy-right protected (optional) and... Yeah, I don't know. I have a horrible memory. BUT THERE IS INFO ON THERE SOMEWHERE!!

You said it! and I would love to read your stuff... personally because I am the same about my writing.

As for the plagiarism thing... I wouldn't worry too much about it; people who are ignorant enough to steal are usually too wrapped up in their own world to really try to find an 'underground gem'.

And put it this way even it someone did or tried to steal something you posted here to turn a profit or gain publicity, (they would not be capable of replicating it) they would only have that piece and the big picture would totally be missed. Only MonsterBrand has the 'big picture' in mind. It may be obvious to you but to us its always a surprise ;D

Have faith in the work you two do, as well as hope that fellow humanity can be trusted.
Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla,...
Keep up the great work you two! I love logging into deviant and having fresh sights to see!

I am very interested.
I worry about the same thing; the majority of what I submit is lit, because that's how my mind works. I take the time periodically to google quote lines from each piece and check to see that they don't turn up elsewhere, though.

I think you should just throw it out there. Post it - Publish it.
Unless your writing a personal reminder to yourself or details of a secret plan its not worth locking up your thoughts. This is especially true if your at a place where you feel like your at a fork in the road.

Whats the worse thing that can happen - a bad critique? Idea theft? Or that you never expressed yourself in a free artistic way?

Take all of the possibilities into account and assume that every published work had negative feedback or was stolen - you would stop. And the loss - 1/1,000,000th of your total lifetime of creativity.

Then, in 100 years from now, with your work still published somewhere on the internet, the works with the bad critiques will be re-found by a new world full of people who re-critique your writing. They will have a different frame of mind. A mind that you helped to shape by all the other instances of artistic expression that you had decided not to keep private...

Well... I'd like to read your writings but I understand you as well. Don't know what to do about theft :S but there are many people who want to read anything you read, for sure. Whatever you post...is up to you and your desire to share it with us ;) You have my support :D

I would love to read your writing!!! BUT I wouldn't post anything you might want to publish someday. I've written a lot of poems (my mam was a poet) and they are very deep and personal to me and people have told me they're pretty good but my aint will not let me post anything here or anywhere unless I were to copyright them first. Well, that's a lot of work and costs money and even then it doesn't stop people from plagiarizing a line or two from your copyrighted work because it's like you said, words are less tangible than a picture which is sort of, mostly physical. We speak a zillion words a day, can't really copyright them or publish them. So as much as I would want to read them, I would fear that someone would steal them. My sister says you are very talented so her assumption is that your writing is probably really talented and special too, so be wary about putting it on line because in that instant, it's gone forever from your grasp. This is the internet. It travels fast and furious. Mab, my aint, lets me journal here and share deep thoughts that way because that's just blather, you know, and even though my teachers say my writing is good, a journal is just a jumble of semi-organized thoughts. If someone steals my thoughts, big deal. A girl my age has a million thoughts. But a poem or short story is art and if I were you I wouldn't post unless you've already copyrighted it or published it in a school yearbook, journal, or poem club that's time stamped and dated. And even then, you have to go after the plagiarist or thief. That's more work and heartache, having to prove they stole your poem, your short story, etc. Do you really have the energy to do that? Oi, I hate the internet that way sometimes. ...Now I'm sad. And angry.:o But I'll be fine.=D

PS Sorry I haven't been here in awhile. School! Ak!

I'd enjoy reading some. I'm also a writer (soon to be published, mid 2013). I have such an appreciation of the art that theft need not be a concern.

If you send me a note, we could exchange emails and I could send you a PDF of the sample portion of my second novel that I'm giving to a select group of people for critique. Think of it as anything from collateral to a sharing of the love of literature.

I would love to read your work! But at the same time, I understand your fear of showing your ideas and stories. It's the same thing I go through, and it is terrifying.
My suggestion would be to really sit down and think it through. Think about the out comes.
What will you do if you find someone has stolen your ideas? Claims it as their own?

The other option, besides posting them on dA, is make a forum perhaps? A member only forum, so that those who really want to read it have the option, and you also have control of who sees it and who doesn't. Then after that, if you feel comfortable with letting people see it, upload it to dA for the public?

I really hope this makes sense, but basically, instead of left or right, why not make your own path and go down the middle?
