Brookfield Zoo. Autumn 2009.
Shot through two sets of wire fencing in near darkness.

Eastern Screech Owl (Red Phase)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The mouse in the Screech Owl's beak was dead before the bird started feeding on it. The keepers give the owls mice that are already dead so the birds will in turn be less aggressive when handling them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Location: Eastern North America

Size: 16 - 25 cm

Diet: Large insects (beetles, moths, crickets, cicadas, etc) and small mammals (mice, shrews, rabbits, etc)

Sadly, owls are slowly but surely decreasing in population. Especially the barn owls due to the obvious reason that old barns are being torn down for safey reasons. It is a great shot
