Another artist on my watch list just made a selection of her posts available as a 2011 calendar through DA. I think this would be a fantastic idea for you! Many of us would love seeing underwater life every month of the year.
MonsterBrand Featured By Owner Oct 31, 2010  Professional Photographer
Wow, I've never even thought of making a calendar. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to sift through my millions of photos :noes: and see if I can find some worthy shots that cover the 12 months. :D

How do you set up a shot like this? I assume there was a light reflection on the glass...? Is there a setting that gets rid of stuff like that? Just curious, I don't know anything about the technicalities of photography.
MonsterBrand Featured By Owner Mar 20, 2010  Professional Photographer
well, I didn't really have a set of for this shot at all :giggle; I just kept walking around the tank, moving with the sea dragon and snapped as many shots as I could (I wasn't allowed to use flash, as it disturbs the animals) so it was VERY difficult to get a good shot of these animals. There was a very small amount of light reflection on the glass of the Sea Dragon Tank because they are exhibited in kind of a dark section of the Shedd Aquarium (which ended up being very helpful for me).

Ahh, I see I see. Thanks for the explanation!

Amazing creature. I really love sea horses...they are some of the most intriguing little sea critters. Its sad that there is so much blots out any fine details. I'm guessing you had to take this with a really high ISO?
MonsterBrand Featured By Owner Jan 21, 2010  Professional Photographer
Yes correct. I took SOOO many photos of this Sea Dragon (with and without the flash) and this is the ONLY photo that turned out decent.
I shot the photo in near darkness through very thick, curved glass... so it was VERY difficult to get any sort of decent shot of these animals :noes:

But I spent a lot of time at their exhibit and I tried to get the best shots I could with the shooting conditions I was given...
So, for such a crappy situation... I think it turned out alright =P
jon-rista Featured By Owner Jan 21, 2010  Hobbyist Photographer
Agreed, it turned out pretty well. :) At least it was a larger species...many of them are only a couple inches in size, and pygmy sea horses are less than a centimeter long I think.
