These creatures are amazing. Their social habits have caused me to sit and
watch them for hours in a single sitting (on more than one occasion!)

I love AWDs - they're such a beautiful, interesting, and often overlooked, species. To me, they are fascinating and breathtaking - this picture really sums up the species. Those intense eyes really speak volumes, no matter if they are side on or head on.

Great capture, once again

Awesome shot.

I *love* African Wild Dogs. They just don't get any love, though which is a crying shame because they're beautiful creatures IMHO.

I love these kinds of dogs, I was really mad about a story I heard recently about a mom who dangled her 2 year old child over the railing of a wild dog exhibit and accidentally dropped her kid and the kid was eaten alive by the dogs and now they are trying to sue and close down the zoo because of it. It's so dumb, they are WILD for a reason! sorry just thought i'd tell you that story because it made me mad and was about wild dogs.

African Wild Dogs are truly wonderful creatures, but they are also highly aggressive. I did actually hear about that incident with the unfortunate child. I am more angry with the mother that thought it was ok to allow her child to stand on a railing that was so high, and above the enclosure of such dangerous animals. Although I am very sad for the loss of her child, she should have known better.

And yes, African Wild Dogs are wild creatures, they only did what they were instinctually driven to do.

The zoo is in limbo right now. They're trying to determine whether the child perished from the fall, or from the wild dogs. I do hope the entire zoo does not get shut down though. That would mean a lot of homeless animals, and a lot of unfortunate people having to find new jobs. :\

Not to but in, but I found a handful of reports saying that the child did not die from the fall, but sadly from the dogs. The zoo has said that they will not euthanize any of the remaining dogs, but the exhibit will be closed till maybe spring time. Hopefully that remains true.

oh ok, then the news must have been updated. I actually figured the child passed away due to the wild dogs. I'm happy to hear that the remaining animals are not being euthanized for doing what they do naturally. I'm sure the zoo and its officials are going to be re-designing the dogs' exhibit so that such an incident does not occur in the future. At the zoo by me, the wild dogs are behind glass. And the part of their enclosure that is outside does not allow guests to lean or get close to the animals (there are 2 or 3 sets of fences).

Anywho, I hope you're right about the zoo re-opening. Although the loss of any life is tragic, the zoo and the other animals (and the zoo-goers and zoo staff) should not have to perpetually suffer for the mistake of one highly irresponsible parent.

Yeah. They'll probabbly set up a fence, mesh or glass.
The lion exhibit at the Oregon zoo had some glass installed at the open air viewing.
It'll be interesting to see the dynamics of zoo viewing after this incident.
The zoo's Facebook page is 100% chaos of people bashing each other, the parents, the dogs, the zoo...pretty much everyone. I think whoever managed the page shut it down. I can't seem to find it anymore.

I completely agree with you, zoo's don't really have domesticated creature's that's why it's called a zoo. For the mother to be that stupid and allow her two year old to fall, let alone over the wild dogs exhibit is byeond me. Sueing a zoo for her child being killed is basically sueing the wild dogs for being wild; makes no sense and is pointless.

If i'm not mistaking I believe that is the same breed of dogs that killed a 2 year old infant that lost balance and fell into the exhibit at Pittsburgh Zoo and was mauled to death!

It's a nice shot and I agree they are amazing animals...
but the timing is kinda sad considering the very recent tragedy.

ah, well. I actually did not know about that incident involving the child until this evening. I didn't mean to appear insensitive, I was just unaware until it was too late... Otherwise, I would have waited to post this photo at a later date.

No problem, I figured that was the case.
I only heard about the incidence myself about 5 minutes before I pulled up my dA message list.
