Such a great picture...
Do you know what kind of python this is? I looked up some kinds of pythons.. it sorta looks like a "short- tailed python" is you look on Google Images.

Thank you ;)  The label on the tank said "Reticulated Python", but I've received quite a few comments here on DevArt from other users saying it is a short-tailed python.  I looked up the snake's facial features and it does appear to be a short-tailed python (so the zoo had the tank mislabeled unfortunately it appears).

That's not a retic, but Python curtus.

Really? I'm beginning to think that this snake is a weird subspecies, or his tank was mislabeled at the zoo.  I have had quite a few people tell me that he is something else.  But the label on his exhibit said he was a Reticulated Pyton.

I'm not as well-rounded on reptiles as I am on avians and mammals, so I'll have to ask a few of the keepers next time I visit that zoo.

Thanks for the info ;)

Yup, that's short tailed python, precisely Python curtus brongersmai "black form".
Maybe early in its cage was retic and then it was replaced by P. curtus and they forgot to change label or they thought that people don't mind :P
Cheers : )

Think again:…
The zoo is definitely right and probably has multiple zoo staff with some sort of education to back up their position. However, anyone with a functional set of eyes can easily determine via google that it is certainly a reticulated python. The difference between short tailed pythons (a name used for three different species, actually) and reticulated pythons is very extreme both physically and behaviorally. This snake bares the obvious markers of a reticulated python and I guarantee that is exactly what it is.
As to what subspecies of retic' it is, now that's a whole different story as the difference between these is based mainly on size and alterations on body pattern. On top of that, there are also many subspecies mixes as a result of breeders now domesticating this species as they breed for smaller size and calm demeanor. Most likely it is the mainland subspecies (P. r. reticulatus) though as these are one of the most common and make impressive displays for zoos which want them.
Anyway, sorry I couldn't find this sooner. Just couldn't believe someone would make the ludicrous argument that it is a different species of snake, despite obviously being the species the zoo states that it is, yet somehow nobody else jumped in to point that out.
