Day 109 - Stop calling me Wolf by MonsterBrand Day 109 - Stop calling me Wolf by MonsterBrand

photo *MonsterBrand

*African Wild Dog (photo shot through chain link fence).

*The title was inspired by the fact that surprisingly, these canines
are mistaken for wolves and hyenas quite often (this observation was
made during a personal experience at the Brookfield Zoo - I stayed at
the Wild Dogs' exhibit for a couple hours altogether and not one person
read the exhibit sign while looking at the Wild Dogs - every family and
couple that came by would exclaim "Wow! look at those ugly wolves" or
something along the lines of "those hyenas have awesome colors!")
I was lucky enough to get to talk to a few of the people and let them know
that these incredible animals are in fact African Wild Dogs and taught them
a little about the animals' social habits, geographic location, eating habits, etc.
Not only do I love learning, I love sharing my newfound knowledge with
others as well. I hope you enjoy my photo! More photos of this
amazing group of Wild Dogs will be coming to my DevArt gallery soon!

I can't remember what it was, but I saw a documentary when they showed a video clip of a wild dog and the narrator called it a hyena.

Ugh, I think I totally saw that same video! :noes: It was quite awhile ago that I saw the clip and I couldn't believe that the editor(s) allowed that video to be published, because of the incorrect information they were sharing.  *face palm*

Does it have blue eyes?

I can understand the general ignorance surrounding the species, they don't really get much exposure. I've only seen them in one section of a documentary on Africa and in two video games.

Of course there's no excuse for not reading the information provided about the animal at the zoo.

All African Wild Dogs (as far as I'm aware) have brown eyes.  The eyes appear blue in my photograph because of the wierd reflecting phenomenon that was happening with the sun's light comboned with various panes of glass, etc.  When I brightened the area around the eyes a bit in post-production, the blue color was only enhanced. ;)

Someone looks grumpy here xD...

They are such beautiful creatures, their markings really capture me c: That some people actually called them - ugly wolves -, I feel for the Wild Dogs x3

And this is such a great shot as well ! I think it is quite mesmerizing if an animal stares right into the camera. It'd give me goosebumps : P

What beautiful coat. In the nature documentaries I have seen, I've seen African wild dogs, but the camera crew never seemed to focus too long or too closely on them; instead, the crew would go to the African cats, elephants, crocodiles, hippos, rhinos, or hyenas and study them. Thank you for giving us a zoom in on these lovely animals, :iconmonsterbrand:. :)

well, even though the correct term is African Wild Dog, another name for them IS the "painted wolf / painted dog" (there's also 'Ornate wolf' but not many people use that one anymore).
so personally i never understood why people get so angry when others call them 'wolves' by sheer mistake or maybe even on purpose.

though the thing with people calling them 'hyenas' or 'cats' even, yeah that's totally understandable to be a little irked at that. XD

oh well, such a beautiful animal!
very lovely photo you've taken of him. :D

Yes I know they're also called "painted wolves" ;) And I never stated in description that I get 'upset' or 'angry' when people refer to these animals with incorrect terminology (because I don't become upset by it - I see it as an opportunity to interact with people and to help them learn something new.) :)

Thank you very much for the kind words and for checking out my photo

oh, no no. i didn't really mean you specifically, i was going by some other groups of people on here that seriously get crazy angry about it. (i've seen some on here get so angry about it that they literally wish death upon those who just said it mistakenly.)

i'm so sorry for the confusion!
i should've worded that a bit better ^^;

and you're welcome!

oh ok, I just misunderstood, no worries ;) It's all cool.

And I know what you mean. I've seen people get very upset here on DevArt about the most miniscule things. People shouldn't sweat the small stuff, but it's just their personal preference I guess.

Thank you again

Oh man I absolutely love African wild dogs! Their patterns are so beautiful and they're surprisingly social and friendly to even the sick and old of their packs. Not to mention how fearsome a predator they are. An incredibly beautiful animal.

Yeah. One time my elementary class went to the zoo and many of them kept calling the dogs hyenas, and I kept trying to correct them but they wouldn't believe me! Shame they'll be sent out of the zoo for awhile...
